When his shrunken little wife hobbled into the room with her walker and XXS pink sweater, my infinitely crusty, cranky, curmudgeony patient showed me a rare moment of sweetness when he announced that it was only one month until their 71st anniversary.
I asked if his wife wanted a more comfortable chair. He said, with a grin, that she wouldn't take one, because she was too stubborn, and that her stubbornness gives him a lot of courage in life.
He said that their key to a good marriage was that, even when both people are stubborn to beat all, even in all those years, they never once went to bed without a goodnight kiss.
